The Beauty of an Outlier celebrates the singular artistic practice of Franklin Williams, a multimedia artist based in Petaluma, who has spent more than six decades cultivating an idiosyncratic and diaristic approach to art making. Williams has dedicated his life to what he refers to as “beauty, mystery and myth” captured into visual form and defined by deep devotion, invention, and love.

Williams’s work defies easy classification, eluding the confines of the Funk, Nut, Visionary, and Pattern & Decoration movements that emerged in the 1960s. His intricately constructed paintings, sculptures, and works on paper combine a range of techniques—often rooted in household craft traditions and ornamentation—that include stitching yarn and crochet thread directly onto the surface. Through texture, color, and the repetition of knots, marks and dots, Williams has developed a singular visual language that animates his surfaces. His practice engages elemental themes of desire and fantasy, life and death, and the delicate boundary between the real and the imagined. Combining figuration and abstraction, this deeply personal and often autobiographical work is rich with material and conceptual experimentation.

The Beauty of an Outlier is curated by Lisa Lightman and Michelle Scott.

Exhibiting Artists

Franklin Williams

An artwork featuring a large central portrait of a woman split down the middle into two distinct facial sections. The left side of her face is rendered in a solid vibrant yellow with detailed patterns outlining her eye and brow, while her flowing brown hair is composed of intricate, undulating lines. The right side of her face is textured with a fine white grid pattern overlaying a more realistic depiction of her eye and red lips. The entire portrait is set against a complex, busy background of swirling, light-blue and tan drapery patterns, all contained within a border of small yellow dots.
An intricate, textured artwork captures a close-up portrait of a figure wearing a detailed, helmet-like head covering adorned with a star shape on the side, with wide, intensely patterned eyes looking forward. The figure's lower face and body are draped in undulating, wing-like or fabric structures filled with fine dotted details and parallel lines, all set against a warm, vibrant background densely filled with golden, stylized heart shapes.
An artwork depicts a distorted, stylized face rendered in a warm yellow hue with a prominent blue eye and complex linework, appearing to open its mouth wide to consume a white, geometric shape. The central figure is framed by a background layer of vivid teal and gold patterns, which is set within a broader border featuring delicate floral patterns, large green and blue leaves, and small red blossoms against a pale, textured ground.
Artwork featuring a large, stylized green gloved hand with a textured, pebbled surface reaching down from the left toward a small face in the lower right corner. The face, outlined with thick red stitches, has prominent dark-rimmed eyes and a yellow-toned visage nestled within dark, wavy hair. The surreal composition is filled with abstract patterns, vertical white shards or pillars, and spherical elements set against a deep, stippled background with frayed textile edges at the top and bottom.
