¡Viva Precita Eyes!: 50 Years of Public Community Mural Arts and Culture is an exhibition that celebrates the collaborative work between artists and the communities they serve. To celebrate our 50th anniversary, we will explore the origins of Precita Eyes, and take visitors on a journey through those 50 years of community-focused public artwork, delving into five of the organization’s most influential mural projects.
Precita Eyes started off as a workshop lead by our founder Susan Cervantes, culminating in the creation of “The Precita Eyes Way,” an artistic practice built on collaboration with the community, artists, the past and the present. “¡Viva Precita Eyes!” is a collaboration between the artists, staff, and community of Precita Eyes, to honor our past and history within the San Francisco Mural movement and the artists in the Mission District.
The community has selected five murals—with a long history and personal connection—to explore our past and future. The exhibition will include original documents from each project, the original sketches, photos from the time of production and current photos of the mural, and other contextual ephemera.
