Joan Moment

March 13 – May 23, 2027

Verge Center for the Arts

An exhibition of Joan Moment, who capitalized on an era of possibility through inherent curiosity and experimentation over a 60-year career

An abstract painting featuring white and dark red patterns thickly painted onto a textured black background. The composition is filled with organic, repeating shapes outlined in white, including a large tiled oval resembling a turtle shell or spiral pathway near the top, several concentric circles, and bone-like or fan-shaped grid structures. Near the center, a small, distinct shape is outlined in deep red, contrasting with the otherwise monochromatic white-on-black color scheme.

The latter half of the twentieth century marked many shifts in culture and art, ceaselessly expanding our notions of possibility. Nationally renowned artist Joan Moment capitalized on this era of possibility through her inherent curiosity and experimentation; crafting a 60-year career of expansive technique, material innovation, and sharp humor.

Verge Center for the Arts is proud to present the first retrospective of Joan Moment’s life and work. The showcase of which centers Moment within her artistic times, while defining her as the visionary she is. With deep roots within the Sacramento artistic and academic community, Moment’s contributions are far-reaching and this exhibition aims to further contextualize her historical impact.
