Cayuga Playground Park

A site-specific installation of sculptures, paintings, and other creations by visionary gardener Demetrio Braceros

Further Afield
A vibrant, geometric painting featuring an intricate mandala framed by two stylized creature-like dogs. The mandala consists of concentric rings of red, green, yellow, and white triangular and petal-like patterns radiating outward from a flower-like core. Flanking this circular design on a warm ochre background are two thin, elongated, reddish-brown figures resembling greyhounds or jackals standing on their hind legs. The creatures face inward toward the mandala with their front paws raised, wearing yellow shirts and green shorts with dark patterned waistbands.

The show is located at the Cayuga Clubhouse, in Cayuga Playground Park, a city park with entrances off Naglee Ave at Cayuga Ave and Alemany Blvd. The park is in a residential neighborhood with street parking available. The closest Muni bus routes are the 14 and 14R Mission, which stop at Mission Street and Lowell St., an eight-minute walk away.

Monday–Sunday  11 a.m.–4 p.m.

Free

ADA Accessible. The Naglee Ave entrance is drive-up and wheelchair-accessible. From Alemany Blvd, either walk down a dirt park path or down the Naglee Ave Tiled Steps. On-site bathrooms available.

Kindness to Any Creature is the first survey of Filipino American artist and visionary gardener Demetrio Braceros. Held at Cayuga Playground, where Braceros worked as a landscaper and caretaker from 1986 until 2010, the exhibition includes almost 100 objects, most of them crafted from cypress wood he cleared from the park. Many locals know Braceros for his dramatic transformation of Cayuga Playground from neglected area into a vital community space, as well as the playful topiary and sculptures he carved on his lunch breaks and installed throughout the park. His commitment to the well-being of the neighborhood earned honors from city and state officials, dedicatory murals, and appearances on local television. Kindness to Any Creature, however, draws from the vast repository of artworks that Braceros has quietly kept at home. They include statuettes, reliefs, furniture, and painted gourds, and feature a kaleidoscopic sweep of imagery, from celebrities to saints and animals. Braceros calls many of them “souvenirs”—a description consistent with his fondness for understatement. But they also recall traditional Filipino amulets that offer strength and good fortune, as well as the anthropomorphic sculptures that Braceros’s Ifugao ancestors made as protectors of their rice granaries. The exhibition is held in Cayuga Playground’s on-site clubhouse, returning Braceros’s artworks to the place from where they came, and inviting visitors to experience this exhibition within his larger creative project.

Demetrio Braceros: Kindness to Any Creature includes an introductory text by Yoni Carnice.

Demetrio Braceros

A single elongated, slender wooden gourd hanging vertically against a seamless white background, suspended by a bright red wrapped cord at its stem. The entire body of the gourd is painted dark forest green and covered in dense, highly detailed colorful illustrations. Swirling yellow ribbons, stars, and small multi-colored floral blossoms decorate the middle sections. Near the bottom, stylized orange-and-white fish swim above a painted banner framing the very base, which contains partially visible capitalized block text reading "EMIE OF".
A tall, slender sculpture of a stylized animal, similar to a greyhound, perched on a decorative cylindrical base. The light-colored wood carving depicts a creature with long, smooth lines, rabbit or goat-like ears and paws, and a tapered snout, sitting upright in a crouching posture. Atop its head stands a thin, vertical rod capped with a small, cross-like horizontal element. The entire figure rests on a fluted, columns-style circular pedestal that features vertically carved panel lines and a faint rectangular inscription carved into one side.
A wooden structure shaped like a freestanding billboard or post sign, angled slightly to the right against a plain white backdrop. The frame consists of two tall vertical posts connected by two horizontal crossbeams, all painted a warm tan color and decorated with a repeating pattern of hand-painted green ivy leaves and delicate vines. Suspended between the crossbeams is a rectangular, marbled yellow-and-white center panel with currency. Written in the currency is the word "VICTORY" in a clean, black, hand-drawn serif font.
An intricate, multi-tiered cylindrical sculpture resting on a clean white surface. The piece is divided into distinct sections. The top third is carved from lighter, honey-colored wood, depicting a dense, miniature mountain citadel or architectural ruins with hollowed-out windows, archways, and bridges. This rests upon a larger, dark brown cylinder carved with dense, high-relief scenes of figures and landscapes. The front of this dark base features a prominent rectangular frame containing the carved text "THE HEAVEN OF GOD," which sits directly above the word "FAITH" carved in bold block letters across the bottom rim.
