Steeled places the sculptural history of ten Bay Area women in conversation, playing tribute to their work and revealing continuities of experimentation, material intelligence, and resolve.
The exhibition brings together Ruth Asawa, Deborah Butterfield, Bella Feldman, Linda Fleming, Marta Thoma Hall, Ruth Horsting, Mildred Howard, Maria Porges, Lucy Puls, and Nancy Rubins. All have strong ties to Northern California, and all have incorporated metal into their sculptural practices.
Steeled portrays practices that are attuned to dreams and visions, to creating objects that both move us and shift perceptions. These artworks trace a wide variety of experiences; the traditional and technological, the unseen and the visible. Steeled reflects on what an exhibition can be—an opportunity for sustained attention, a chance to experience the juxtaposition of artworks never seen together.
The exhibition takes place at the Floating Art Museum, which is on a barge in Alameda.

We’re so lucky to have Hashi Gawa. Their bento boxes are delicious, affordable, and always hit the spot. The atmosphere is super cute, and everyone is so friendly.

The USS Hornet Museum is a great place to check out. It’s an enormous retired Navy aircraft carrier filled with airplanes, history, expansive water views, and plenty of sea breeze. It’s also close to the ferry, where you can catch a beautiful ride across the Bay to San Francisco.
