Icons: Creating a Movement

March 12 – May 8, 2027

Creative Growth

An exhibition celebrating Creative Growth artists whose groundbreaking practices have shaped the Bay Area art scene, curated by Matthew Higgs

An abstract, three-dimensional textile sculpture resembling a rounded, irregular bundle. The form is densely wrapped in layers of rust-orange yarn, with strands crisscrossing in seemingly random patterns to create a complex, web-like texture. Beneath the orange fibers, glimpses of a pale, cream-colored material are visible.

Purple yarn emerges along the edges and forms elongated, rounded extensions on either side of the central mass. Some strands hang loosely from the sculpture, creating a sense of movement and unfinished texture.

Icons: Creating a Movement celebrates Creative Growth artists whose groundbreaking practices have established them as icons of the Bay Area art scene, of contemporary art, and in the field of Outsider Art.

With the support of Creative Growth, these artists have contributed to a transformative movement that recognizes artists with disabilities as visionary contributors to artistic practice and cultural discourse.

The work of these artists has been acquired by prominent collections worldwide, including MoMA (New York), SFMOMA (San Francisco), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC), the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York), Collection de L’Art Brut (Lausanne, Switzerland), the Treger Saint Sylvestre Collection (São João da Madeira, Portugal), ICA Miami, and the American Folk Art Museum (New York).

The Creative Growth gallery will spotlight the work of Judith Scott, Dan Miller, William Scott, Nicole Storm, Monica Valentine, and Dwight Mackintosh. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Scott’s sculptural practice, an on-site installation by artist Nicole Storm, and large-scale paintings by Dan Miller.

This artwork is a colorful, hand-painted acrylic illustration on paper featuring a group of diverse individuals beneath a bold, blue background.

At the top, large, stylized lettering reads “SCI-FI,” with the name “William Scott” written beneath it. Additional text reads “Since the 1990s, the next generation” and “Wholessome Diana Ross.” The central portion of the artwork features oversized, yellow lettering spelling out “SFOS SCIENCE FICTION HUMANS.”

In the upper-right corner, a large illustrated portrait of a Black woman with voluminous, curly black hair accented with blue highlights dominates the composition. She wears bold pink eyeshadow, pink lipstick, and large hoop earrings.

Along the bottom of the artwork, six illustrated individuals stand closely together, each wearing brightly colored clothing, including green, red, pink, brown, blue, and orange outfits. The figures represent a range of hairstyles, skin tones, and facial features, emphasizing diversity and individuality.
An abstract drawing in a landscape format with blue, purple, and pink writing deeply layered to create cloud-like forms. Under layers include green tones. Most of the painting has large black abstract forms and its center has white circles.
