Located on the museum’s Hyde Street Art Wall, this mural by graphic novelist and illustrator Thien Pham examines food, memory, and local community. The design illustrates traditional Asian noodle dishes alongside regional fusion foods like birria ramen and garlic noodles. Each meal is presented in its traditional vessel, with a single, continuous noodle running through the entire composition to physically connect every dish. The artwork reflects how shared culinary traditions link the diverse cultural groups of the surrounding neighborhood.

  • SPRO Coffee Lab is a major staff favorite with two convenient locations nearby. Really creative, high quality, cocktailesque lattes and cold brews (my personal go-to). They also have interesting food with a solid glizzy.

  • Right at Civic Center, Limoncello serves quality, hearty Italian sandwiches, pizza, and salads alongside coffees, wine, beer, and nonalcoholic drinks, all with great outdoor seating right on the plaza.

  • As a born-and-raised New Yorker, I don’t give out pizza endorsements lightly, but the Asian co-owned Outta Sight Pizza serves up some of my favorite slices in the Bay Area, and is also a major staff favorite here at the museum. They have exclusive items that I love, including sandwiches.
